Taft at Yale 149 Rose was described to Will Taft as atall, raw-boned man with a broken nose,who was known to be a bruiser, of consid-erable physical courage and great endur-ance. It was related to him that Rosehad been slung-shotted and clubbed byEd. Hudson and others, and that his headhad been found to be like a block of granite. Mr. Taft listened attentively to the in-formation and appeared to appreciate it.He did not make much talk about the taskhe had cut out for himself, but seemed tobe in a hurry to get at it, with as few wordsas possible. His brother Charles accom-panied him, not with the intention ofassisting, but merely to be on hand inevent of interference that might be im-proper or unfortunate. They walked upto the corner of Fifth and Elm Streets andquickly found Rose, who was accompaniedby a lady and a friend.
